Board Insulation FAQs

What is PIR board insulation?

PIR is commonly used as a shorthand for ‘polyisocyanurate’, a highly thermally efficient insulation material widely available in the industry. Similar to the organic materials, PIR insulation board is made up of complex hydrocarbon chains and is categorised as ‘combustable’.

How to cut insulation board?

To safely cut wall insulation board, first wear protective gear, including gloves, goggles and a dust mask. Secure the board on a flat surface using clamps and fixings. Mark your cutting line with a straight edge and pencil. Use a sharp utility knife or hand saws for straight cuts, making multiple passes along the marked line until the board is cut through the insulation panels.

What is rigid insulation board?

Rigid foam board insulation is a type of high performance foam plastic that has been hardened and formed into sheets that are easy to cut on site. Most rigid foam boards are made from one of three types of plastics: polystyrene, polyisocyanurate (polyiso), and polyurethane. Rigid foam insulation board offers very high R-values per inch of thickness.

What thickness insulation board should I use?

Thickness of loft insulation must be at least 270mm by law. If you’re thinking about updating the insulation in a loft, you can add additional insulation on top of the existing one the reach the required thickness, as long as the existing insulation is not damaged.
