The primary purpose of mortar is to form a durable bond between masonry units while sealing irregular gaps. When the mixture cures, it forms a rigid structural framework. However, it is deliberately designed to be slightly weaker than the bricks themselves. This makes the mortar the "sacrificial" component—meaning it can be easily chipped out and repaired if it cracks or degrades over time, preserving the bricks.
Practical Mixing Tips
- The Mix: Always measure your parts by volume (e.g., using a bucket) rather than using shovels to ensure consistent color and strength across your wall.
- Water & Plasticizer: Add a small amount of water first, then your materials, and lastly a plasticizer to make the mix workable and "buttery".
- Wastage: Always add an extra 5% to 10% to your material totals to account for mortar spillage and wastage.
