Phenolic Insulation Boards

Phenolic insulation offers the highest thermal performance of any rigid insulation board on the market. With the lowest lambda values available — typically around 0.018–0.020 W/mK — phenolic boards allow you to achieve demanding U-value targets with significantly thinner profiles than PIR or EPS alternatives. This makes them the go-to choice wherever build-up depth is at a premium.

Why Choose Phenolic Insulation?

Phenolic boards are manufactured from a rigid closed-cell foam faced with a low-emissivity foil on both sides. Key advantages include:

  • Best-in-class thermal performance — the lowest lambda values of any mainstream insulation board
  • Slim profiles — achieve the same U-value with less thickness compared to PIR or EPS
  • Low moisture absorption — closed-cell structure resists water ingress
  • Lightweight and easy to handle — simple to cut and install on site
  • Fire performance — many boards carry Class 0 or Class 1 fire ratings

Applications

Phenolic insulation boards are suitable for a wide range of applications including flat and pitched roofs, internal and external wall insulation, and floor insulation. Their slim profile makes them especially popular for internal wall insulation where preserving room dimensions is important.

The Benefits of Phenolic Insulation

Great stability; it has over 90% closed cell formation. Phenolic foams come in varying densities in the range of 35 kg/m³ to 200 kg/m³. High density varieties such as insulation boards have good strength and are suitable for floor insulation. It has low thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of phenolic closed cell insulation material is generally between 0.018 W/m.K and 0.023 W/m.K. It has fire retardant properties and a low smoke level. It is water resistant and has good absorption properties. It is lightweight and so is easy to transport and install. Closed cell phenolic insulation foam can resist almost all inorganic acidic erosion, organic solvents and acids. When exposed to sunlight for long periods it does not show any noticeable ageing.

Frequently Asked Question

Like many other types of insulation, phenolic insulation can last between 20-80 years, depending on the environment it is used in.
While it is possible to install phenolic insulation boards yourself, it is recommended to consult a professional insulation contractor for proper installation. They will have the expertise and knowledge to ensure a correct and effective installation, maximising the insulation's performance and energy-saving benefits.
Phenolic insulation provides a better thermal performance than PIR insulation, with thermal conductivities as low as 0.018 W/mK. Phenolic materials also have a better fire rating.
